Friends of Outlet Creek settle cases with Mendocino County
After years of hard work by local activists and with the assistance of Greenfire Law, the Grist Creek Aggregates' asphalt plant has been removed from the company's Longvale site at the confluence of Outlet and Corral Creeks. Outlet Creek is important salmon spawning habitat and nearby residents and frequent visitors to the area, organized as Friends of Outlet Creek, had watched with increasing alarm as GCA's operations expanded to include asphalt production at this sensitive location.
With Greenfire Law's assistance, the Friends' group sued Mendocino County and the County's Air District three times over. Their efforts have paid off with a settlement that ensures that the air will remain cleaner. The County's resolutions regarding the asphalt plant will be repealed and the site now holds no air permit allowing an asphalt plant. Any future effort to put an asphalt plant at the confluence site will require prior notification of Friends of Outlet Creek and land use and environmental review by the County and Air District.
