Areas of Practice
California's Proposition 65 allows any person acting in the public interest to ensure that chemicals that cause cancer or are reproductive toxins are not discharged to drinking water, and that people are provided with a warning before being exposed to carcinogens or reproductive toxins in consumer goods, the environment, or at work. We work with our clients to take on businesses that break this law.
State and federal lands are a rich legacy that endure and are properly managed only though the dedication of public servants and vigilance by citizen advocates. We assist clients to participate fully in the management of public lands management, from providing comments on proposed project all the way to litigation.
Appropriate Local land use decisions are critical to preventing and solving environmental and social challenges. We have worked with clients to prevent polluting industry in inappropriate locations, transition cannabis cultivation to a legal industry, and ensure appropriate mitigation of impacts of developments that do go forward. We assist clients in making certain officials have all information necessary to make the right decision and that community voices are heard. When necessary, we challenge poorly conceived projects in court.
Through the federal Freedom of Information Act and California's Public Records Act, the government must provide access to a host of public records. We work with our clients to make sure they get the access they are due.
California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA)
California law requires comprehensive evaluation of the impacts of projects that might cause negative environmental effects at the earliest possible stage, to avoid harm to the environment and commitment of resources to poor ideas. We work with clients to make sure community participation is afforded, to prevent poor projects from going forward, and to ensure that project impacts are appropriately mitigated.
Greenfire Law attorneys are admitted and may bring cases in state and federal courts in California, as well as the D.C. Federal District. In addition, working with co-counsel we have and can assist clients across the country, particularly in the Southeastern states.
Clean water is a necessity of life, and yet too often waterways are seen first and foremost as disposal sites. We assist clients in protecting surface and groundwater from pollution.
The growing use of plastic in the U.S. and worldwide, particularly single-use plastic, coupled with wholly inadequate methods of disposal is a serious and growing environmental, waste management, human health, and aesthetic crisis. Through strategic litigation, legislative drafting, and advocacy campaign consultation, we help clients advocate for solutions.
"We reached the old wolf in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes. I realized then, and have known ever since, that there was something new to me in those eyes – something known only to her and to the mountain. I was young then, and full of trigger-itch; I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer, that no wolves would mean hunters’ paradise. But after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view."
